Under a proposal from the European Commission, USB-C would become the only standard for wired charging of smartphones, as proprietary formats like Apple’s Lightning prevent people from reusing cables and many other accessories. European Union officials are hoping to impose charging standards, and Apple, not surprisingly, is not happy with them.
